HOT SHORTS 2007
This was the third year of HOT SHORTS, a festival of short plays celebrating writing, performance and love of theatre in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW. The Festival is put on by Baywrite Theatre Inc, a community organisation formed more than 20 years ago and kept going by busy local people who just can’t resist a show.
This year’s HOT SHORTS was produced by Rosemary Chance. Entries closed on 16th July and performances were held at the Byron Community & Cultural Centre on 19, 20, 26 & 27 October.
Eleven plays by the following writers were performed – Desmond Bellamy, Chris Benaud, Craig Hearps, Andrea Heinrichs, Luke Prendergast, Iris Ray, Henry di Suvero, Bob Tissott, David Thomson and Paula Williams.
Three prizes were awarded by audience vote:
$1000 to Bob Tissott for his play, 100 YEARS;
$500 to Chris Benaud for THE RAT TRAP;
and
$250.00 to Luke Prendergast for REG AND ALAN SAVE THE WORLD.
A FOURTH prize of $600, The Miss Julie Prize for Playwriting, was also won by Bob Tissott for 100 YEARS.
This prize was decided by industry panel comprising Julian Louis – Artistic Director of NORPA; well respected local director Susan Melhuish and Richard Vinycomb, Director of ACE Byron Shire.
The panel also especially commended Desmond Bellamy’s play, MUTUAL FEEDBACK WITHDRAWAL.
The Miss Julie Prize was offered by Hot Shorts’ producer, Rosemary Chance, in memory of her mother, Maureen Lovell Chance and was presented to Bob at the prize-giving by Rosemary’s sister, Liz Chance, the show’s Consulting Artistic Director. Miss Julie was Maureen’s errant yellow Fiat.
